Almost all little girls dreamed and wished of being a ballerina when they grow up. I never untile well, into my teen years. Ok, not exactly. But it wasn’t until I was 16 that I started taking ballet classes (in support of my competitive figure skating). I was hooked on the slow, strict grace and measured movements. I liked the delicacy of ballet. I similarly became obsessed with ballet pointe shoes, even trying to teach myself to strut en pointe or at least stand on them.

Many seasons ago, both Gucci and Prada featured high-heels with ribbon ties and snub toes – high fashion pointe shoes. I was never able to find them, but never forgot them. These ballet shoes by Kenneth Cole shoes may not have snub toes or high heels, but it does have long satin ribbons that tie around and around. Those satin soft ties were the huge selling point I see. Ballet flats are everywhere, in every color, material and print. Some added variations: asymmetrical toes, straps, ties and pretty bows. But I have never found ballet flats that have copious, ribbon ties that mimic pointe shoes.

Definitely, the second part that caught my fancy was the metallic, pastel turquoise color. In case you hadn’t noticed by now, I am working on a shoe wardrobe in as many colors as possible. This particular shade, neither too bright nor too pale, is a rather unique shade. I have yet to see a color that even comes close.

Like any woman, I can’t resist a good deal. When I found these at a Kenneth Cole outlet shop, $80 marked down to $10, I almost bought every color they had. Wouldn’t you? However, after wearing them for the first time, I was quite glad that I hadn’t. I own several other pairs of Ken Cole shoes, and love all of them; even my husband likes Kenneth Cole Shoes. But these kind of shoes are downright painful – definitely the most uncomfortable pair of shoes I ever owned. It might be my own fault though.

The very first time I worn these flats was when I was out to meet my husband for a lunch date. After lunch, I decided to head to the mall. Since the mall was just a block away from his office, and it was another gorgeous day in Los Angeles, I decided to walk. I figured “I’m wearing flats – I can walk a bit in these.” The walk there wasn’t so bad. While strolling around the mall, my feet started to feel pain… time to leave. The walk back to my car was brutal, more painful with every step. The back of the shoe rides up high on the heel, straigh way up to the achilles tendon, rubbing, cutting, and irritating with every single step. I will spare you the negative details, but suffice it to say, my feet were but one hell of a mess by the time I finally got to my car.

These shoes are leather, so I am certain that they just need some breaking in. However, that first day scarred me (literally and figuratively). I have been too traumatized to try them again – but they are too beautiful to give up on. Does anyone know of a support group for people who want to forgive their painful shoes?

Add Cause to Your Brand

Do you run a restaurant or an eatery and have the ambition to feed the poor and hungry someday. Then make that known to people. Add that to your brand and strengthen it. Like minded people will join your cause by eating in your restaurant regularly. Kenneth Cole shares the history of his company in the book – “Footnotes: What You Stand For Is More Important Than What You Stand In”. Cole wanted to become a lawyer and before enrolling in a law school he took a summer off to join his father in the shoe business that he owned in Brooklyn. Kenneth Cole was so taken by the business that he chucked his plans for studying law and started his own shoe manufacturing company in 1982.

Cole wanted to showcase his shoes in a trade fair scheduled at the Hilton Hotel in New York City. He had two options then – either rent a room at the Hilton like most of the participating companies for the trade fair or set up a show room near the hotel. He didn’t want to go with the crowd and rent a room at Hilton, since he did not have the funds to do so. So he hit upon an idea: to sell his shoes from a tractor trailer parked beside the road right in front of the hotel. However there was a problem.

The New York City rules didn’t permit such things except to utility companies doing social service or movie production companies shooting for movies. Kenneth Cole changed his brand and company name to Kenneth Cole Productions Inc and applied for a permit to secure a full-length movie – The Birth of a Shoe Company. The mayor gave his blessings to the shoot, posted two policemen as a compliment from the city of New York, and Cole sold 40,000 pairs of shoes in just three days from a tractor trailer parked in front of the Hilton. This is an honest admission of a creative solution to a teething problem.

Honest admission of the days of struggle and suffering only adds to brand value. This goes a very long way in building an emotional bond with your clients. While customers that stuck with you from the beginning will be proud that they have been with you and have seen you rise; people unaware of your story may be impressed by it and get attracted to the brand. All this however doesn’t mean that the product is of no importance. Products come first and story telling later.
